Oliver could use Haiti

I've had to do a lot of work in connection with the Haitian relief recently, suffice it to say my job deals in emergencies. My family also has friends who have visited Haiti extensively in the past. Even before the earthquake this year Haiti was not a good place. Staring around the age of 10-12, girls couldn't be out in the streets unescorted, the "men" of Haiti routinely attack these girls.and nothing was ever done about it. The gangs ruled the streets, government officials were dishonest and indifferent to their people's pain. Financial aid was funneled into the pockets of the most powerful, and therefore, most corrupt

Radio talk show host Michael Savage asked why the Marines were being sent into a humanitarian relief operation. There is a greater chance that supplies and food will be ripped from the hands of the needy by thugs (both elected and not) as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Perhaps this is callous but wouldn't a great story be one of Green Arrow patrolling the Haitian streets at night, keeping the animals at bay?

Former NBA player and current blogger Paul Shirley was recently fired from ESPN's website for expressing similar views. He writes, "I haven’t donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort. And I probably will not. I haven’t donated to the Haitian relief effort for the same reason that I don’t give money to homeless men on the street. Based on past experiences, I don’t think the guy with the sign that reads 'Need Your Help' is going to do anything constructive with the dollar I might give him. If I use history as my guide, I don’t think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either."

Shirley went on to include an open letter to the people of Haiti;

Dear Haitians
First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded. As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

The Rest of the World

I suppose many people will find these ideas to be in bad taste but the conditions are a reality. A story like this would be relevant, controversial, honest, and unique, everything a great story should be; everything that Green Arrow stories once were
